- Scope and ContentMary Ann Purser: a servant of Mr John Thompson. On 25 September Mary Ann Butterworth came into the shop and asked for a halfpenny for 2 farthings. He gave her halfpenny and then she asked for a half pound of pork. Before she asked for the pork she saw her lean over the counter and put her hand into a drawer into which the shop money was put. She told her mistress what she had seen. John Thompson: a baker and grocer at Tempsford. Having heard from her servant that she had seen Mary Ann Butterworth at her cash drawer he suspected Butterworth of having taken some money out of it. Butterworth denied this but when he threatened to call the police, she went home and brought him 3 pence which she had taken from the drawer. He had not missed the money from the drawer as he did not know what was in it. PC William Hills: he was directed by Mr Thompson to take Mary Ann Butterworth into custody on the charge of taking money from a drawer in his shop. He apprehended Butterworth, who said she had only taken 3 pennies and was very sorry. He told her she need not confess unless she thought it proper.
