- Scope and ContentJohn Levitt: on 17 October William Wilshere came to his shop and purchased a piece of beef. After he had gone away he missed another piece of beef off the block. He suspected that Wilshere had taken it and sent for the police. He information the policeman and gave him a part of a bone which had been cut off the piece of beef that had been lost. He told the policeman he suspected Wilshere and went with him to Wilshere’s lodgings and found a piece which he identified as the piece which he had lost. PC Reuben Pepper: on 7 September about 7pm, Mr Levitt, a butcher at Shefford sent for him. In consequence of information received he went to the lodging of William Wilsher where he found a piece of beef. Mr Levitt identified it as the piece which had been stolen. Statement of the accused: “I have nothing to say except that if he likes to make it up I will make it up and pay a sum of money”.
