  • Scope and Content
Lucknow, 12th October 1862 My Darling Katie, I will not let another letter leave for Flitwick without a scrap for my dear eldest daughter in answer to a very nice letter I received from her ten days ago. I am very busy just now in a variety of ways, what with Parades and superintending a garden which I am laying out for a soldiers club so that I find I have not so much time left for writing as I could wish. I was very very pleased to hear such good accounts of you darling Katie from Mama, she says you are decidedly improving in you music so that you are already beginning to reap the rewards of your patience and painstaking. Persevere, dearest Kate, and do not be discouraged – there are many more stupid little girls that my Kate in the world I know. And remember that every lesson well learnt is something gained and that you are storing up a host of little accomplishments to cheer and amuse poor dear Papa and Mama when they get old and gouty and grey headed of a long winter evening. Please God it will not be long before I am able to fix a time for my return home, but I am obliged to practice patience as well as other folk. I wish you could see my little kitten which is now grown old enough to be a very amusing and playful. It is just like its mother, striped like a tiger only the colour of a grey goose rather than a tiger, in fact my puss is a great companion to me. How is my dear little Min I wonder, and is she as merry as ever, and as fond of blackcurrant tart? I know somebody who will have to make Papa some more slippers if he stays from home much longer – who is it I wonder, remember me very kindly to Miss Easter and say I am so glad to hear her health continues to improve. And now goodbye my own darling Kate with a sweet kiss to Min & yourself, believe me always your most affectionate Papa, John H Brooks.
