  • Scope and Content
William Jordan of St Paul Bedford, pawnbroker – he produced his books from which it appears by an entry in his own handwriting that on 28 December 1943 Thomas Daniels pawned a coat for 5s. On 5 February Daniels came with Terry (the prosecutor) to look at the coat. Terry paid him a penny for the sight of it. In the evening of the same day Daniels came to his shop to redeem the coat, saying he had lost the duplicate. He made out a fresh one. Daniels paid him 6s but had no money to pay the interest so he retained the coat. On 6 February Daniels came in with Bennett to look at the coat and paid a penny for the view. They went out together. A short time later Bennett came with his wife and said he had bought the duplicate from Daniels and wished to have the coat put in his own name. Bennett produced the second duplicate. He transferred the coat, which is the one produced. William Terry of St Paul Bedford, tinman – about 3 weeks ago tomorrow Daniesl came to him and asked if he wanted to buy a brown frock coat. He told Daniels to come down the following morning. Daniels came and they went to Mr Jordan’s to look at the coat. He tried it on and they left together. He asked Daniels what he wanted for his interest in the coat. Daniels said it was pledged for 5s and he could have the duplicate for 10s. They agreed on 8s. He gave Daniels 3s that day and the rest on the following Monday. He received the duplicate from Daniels. Last Saturday night 18th he went to redeem the coat and found it had been taken away Charles Bennett of St Mary Bedford, coach painter – on 5 or 6 February Daniels met him and asked him to buy a coat he had in pawn. They went to Jordan’s to look at it. He gave Daniels 3s for the duplicate, then went and had the coat transferred into his own name.
