    CARDINGTON [to Cecil] Cotton high wood, within 3 miles of Bedford, “foule carrage” bordered N by wood of Mr.Gascoyne, and S by wood of Mr.Colby, in all 243½ acres. The acreage of wood of different ages given; Lepers Quarter wood lies near the last, between the lane which runs between Cotton high wood and Lepers Quarter wood E, and the land of Mr.Gascoyne W, containing in all 21 acres 1 rood 36 perches ELSTOW and KEMPSTON [to Cecil] tenement more or less ruinous in Elstoe with pightle W, and highway E, 1 rood 11 perches 1 acre 1 rood arable in commonfields to N of pightle; 1½ acres 1 rood 17 perches W of Mill Close in Kempston; a hempland near the last 1 rood; piece of meadow in Est Mead Kempston 1 rood; 6 acres 1 rood in common fields of Kempston all of which are in the tenure of George Grene of Elstow, wheelwright, by an indenture under seal of Thomas Swinglehurste and Christopher Walton, servants of Thomas Cecyll, knight [by deputation from Thomas Cecyll dated 20 June 16 Elizabeth]. Indenture dated 22 Apr 16 Elizabeth, 1574, for 21 years, rent 14s and quit rent to crown.
