    William Hawkes of Bailey Street, Luton, manufacturer – on Wednesday 14 May about 8pm he left the blocking iron now produced in his blockhouse. He went to look for it about 10am on the following morning and found it was gone. He then gave information to the police. On Friday 15 May an iron was shown to him by PC Robinson which he identified as his. John Seymour of Bute Street, Luton – he is an assistant to Mr Butcher, pawnbroker of Bute Street. On Friday May 16th Gardner came to their shop with a blocking iron and asked what he would advance on it. Having been informed that an iron was stolen he sent for the police. PC Robinson came and he gave the iron to him. Frederick Robinson of the police force of Luton – on Friday 16th he apprended Gardner and charged him with stealing the blocking iron. Gardner said “my uncle David Manning gave it to me in Brown Brick”. He received the iron from Manning. David Manning of Bailey Street, Luton, manufacturer – he lives next door to Hawkes. William Manning is his nephew and was about his premises on 14 May. He never gave him a blocking iron. He gave Manning one about 16 years ago but it was not at all like the one produced. William Manning – “I have not stolen the iron”
