    George Humphreys of 53 Hitchin Road, Luton, labourer – he brought a truss of hay from Dunstable he believes on 13 November 1877 and left it in the Brewery Yard, Luton. It belonged to Mr Newland. He told Janes there was a truss of hay on the trolley there. He took a load and a truss. He delivered the load and brought the truss back to Luton. He told Janes to take it back to Dunstable to go with the other hay on the line. Edmund Tydeman of Luton, police superintendent – on 19 November 1877 he went to Nr Newland’s office in the evening to see Janes, to hear what information he could give against the last witness and to gain information about the truss of hay. Janes said he knew nothing about it. Mr Newland was present and said “you may as well tell Mr Tydeman what you know because he knows you have had something to do with it”. Janes then made the following statement and signed it … Humphrey told him last Wednesday morning in the yard that there was a truss of hay on the trolley in the Old Brewery Yard. He fetched it about 7 o’clock. He was going to Markyate Street and took it with him to Farley Green. He met Tom Hill of Caddington who had a horse and cart loaded with stones and sold him the truss of hay for 1s 6d. [Cross-examined] Afterwards Mr Newladn said he would forgive Janes if he told the truth. Henry Pigot Newland of Luton, corn merchant and hay dealer – the statement produced was signed in his presence. He did tell Janes he would forgive him if he told the truth. He wrote the letter produced after he saw Janes. [Cross-examined] This was told to him on the Sunday night by Janes and he promised him not to prosecute. Mr Tydeman came on Monday night and the statement was signed. He wrote the letter before the statement was signed. Amos Janes – he has nothing to say.
