    Moses Cakebread of Meppshall, beerhouse keeper and blacksmith – he occupies a shop at Meppershall. Devereux was working for him as a striker up to the time of his arrest. On Monday 10 December he missed the steel spade. He last saw it in his yard. It cost 5s new and is worth a shilling. George Daniels of Shefford, sergeant of police – he searched Devereux’s house and found the spade in a closet under the stairs. He showed it to Mr Cakebread, took Devereux into custody and charged him with stealing the spade. Devereux said “you're not going to do anything in that I hope”. George Dixon of Meppershall, police constable – he conveyed Devereux from Meppershall to Biggleswade by order of Sgt Daniels. On Thursday 13th going along Devereux said he took the spade and must abide by it, and it would have been better to take something her could eat. Joseph Devereux – he has nothing to say.
