Settlement examination of Thomas Cox at present residing in the parish of Knotting: I am about 25 years of age. I was married in the parish church of Knotting in the County of Bedford in the month of December 1839 to my present wife Fanny formerly Fanny Maxey, spinster by whom I have issue three children viz Jane aged 4 years, Eliza aged 2 years and a female infant born in the month of September last. I am the illegitimate son of Jane Cox who died in about the year 1828. I was then about 9 years of age. After my mothers death I continued to reside in the parish of Knotting with my grandfather William Cox and from that time until 1933 I was relieved by Mr George Hine with two shillings per week except the last year when I received only one shilling per week. I and my said wife and three children are the persons mentioned in the Certificate of Chargeability. I have done no act to gain a settlement in my own right. Note: Mr Colletts compliments to mr Hine. Would be much obliged to Mr Hine if he would have the goodness to pay Cox 2 shillings per week beginning Saturday June 14th 1823. Mr Hine shall receive the money, at anytime he pleases. Signed E B Collett, Overseer.
