- Scope and ContentJoseph Creamer of Forest Gate, Essex – he is a clerk in the Northen and Eastern Railway Company’s office at Liverpool Street Station. He was in the High Street, Dunstable about 6pm on Monday when he felt a movement on his chest and saw Kelley’s hand dragging his watch from his waistcoat pocket. He caught hold of Kelley and threw him round against the shutters of a shop. A man came and asked what was the matter and Kelley broke away from him. He caught hold of Kelley again. A second person came and knocked his umbrella out of his hand. He gave Kelley in charge of a policeman. Thomas Cox, police constable in the Metropolitan Police – he was on duty in Dunstable last Monday. Creamer gave the prisoner into his custody on the charge of attempting to steal his watch. He took Kelley into custody with difficulty. He found a chain, a knife and 14/6 in silver on him. Kelley gave the address of 28 Brook Street, Knaresborough, Yorkshire. John Dalton – he lives in London and is a solicitor’s managing clerk. He was in Dunstable last Monday. He was in a crowd on the pavement in the High Street and saw Creamer before him. Kelley was with some others leaning against the shutters of a shop so as to let part of the crowd pass. When Creamer came up the men who were leaning against the shutters rushed forward in front of him and jostled him about. Creamer then got hold of Kelley. He got round and caught hold of Kelley as he was turning down Church Street. Kelley tried to strike Creamer and get away. The policeman got hold of Kelley then. [Cross-examined] He held Kelley until the police came up and helped to give him in charge. At least one man who was leaning against the shutters tried to rescue him. Thomas Kelley – “I am innocent”
