Welch asked if he had seen a man drive by with a pony and trap. He said he saw one pass about 10 minutes age. Welch said that was his brother, who had driven away from him and left him at a public house drunk, and the pony and cart were his. Welch said he had to walk to Luton as he had spent all his money. He said they would be company as far as London. He told Welch he was a bricklayer. Welch said there was plenty of work at Luton and he could get a job. He went to Luton with Welch. Welch then said he did nt like to go home and they slept on some straw all night. The next morning he got work at Woodside, to go the next Monday morning. He did not see Welch again until the following Saturday. One morning he was going to work and went into a public house. Welch asked when he was going down the country. Welch said he was going with his pony and trap to Leicester the next day and that he could ride with him. He agreed. Welch told him where to meet him the next day. Welch showed him where to go for the trap. The man let him have it and he drove away. Welch then got in and drove.
