    Roll 14b Welyngton [illegible but faintly visible under UV light. ‘Willington’ is written vertically along the right-hand side of the parchment in darker ink.] Court of Joan Queen of England held there on the Wednesday next before the feast of the Ascension of the Lord in the thirteenth year of the reign of Henry the fourth after the conquest [11th May 1412] Essoins William Webbe and John [illegible] of the community by John Yarwe [sic] Sworn men John Bande Henry Yarwey John Warner the younger Robert Myton Thomas [illegible] Robert Partryche John Myton John Treket Richard Lytefot John Gaubryel John Yarwey John Bande the younger Grant, entry fine xvjd, fealty They presented that John Cartere held one Messuage and half a virgate of land, according to the custom of the Manor, which holding was exceedingly ruined and defective. And the said John [illegible] and insufficient to sustain and maintain the said holding. And the bailiff is ordered to distrain all his goods and chattels [much of the following passage is illegible, but it is understood to mean ‘so that the holding can be put in a good state of repair’]. .. And afterwards came Thomas Smythe and took the aforesaid holding from the Lady. To be held by the same Thomas, according to the custom of the Manor for the term of his life, rendering and making annually the services and ancient customs. And the said Thomas will maintain, sustain, repair and put right the said tenement at his own expense. And at the end of the term will had it over well and competently repaired with the pledges of Robert Myton and John Gaubryel. And he gave a premium of xvjd [16d]. And he made fealty [torn edge] Also they present that William Herrynge has a ruined and defective barn. Therefore he made surrender into the hand of the lady. [illegible] It remains [illegible] and a penalty for repairs to the aforesaid holding. Day to repair buildings [illegible] Still a day is given to Henry [annotated 'put right'] Yarwey to repair j [1] grange, to John [annotated 'illegible'] Yarwey to repair one cow barn [illegible], John [annotated 'put right'] Goffe to repair a [illegible] and John put right Stoige for repairs to one Inset house , under a penalty for each of xxs [20s]. Grant, premium xvjd [16d], fealty William Webbe was given a day at the last Court to well and sufficiently repair one room and one cow barn under a penalty of losing or forfeiting the holding which he holds from the lady. And the said William was allowed timber to put right the said holding from the keeper of the wood there. And it was not considered by the aforesaid Sworn men that the same William had put right his buildings by the day with the xj [11] large timbers he received. Therefore he was ordered to surrender all his holding to the lady. [illegible] And upon this Richard Baudewene took the aforesaid holding from the Lady. To be held by the same Richard for the term of his life, according to the custom of the Manor, rendering therefrom to the lady xiijs iiijd [13s 4d] and services annually. And the said Richard will maintain and sufficiently repair and put right the said holding at his own expense taking large timbers from the lady. And handing over the said holding well and completely repaired. By the pledges of John Maryan and Thomas Sherborn and he gave xvjd [16d] as premium and made fealty. Heriot j [1] sheep valued at ijs [2s] Grant, premium vjd [6d], fealty John Treket came to this Court and surrendered one Messuage and half a virgate of land, which he held according to the custom of the Manor, into the hand of the lady. After whose surrender a heriot of one sheep, valued at ijs [2s] fell due to the lady. The bailiff is answerable. And afterwards the Lady granted the aforesaid holding to John Rodland. The aforesaid to be held by the same John for the term of his life, according to the custom of the manor. Rendering annually therefrom to the lady xiijs iiijd [13s 4d] and services. And the said John will maintain, and sufficiently repair and put right the said holding at his own expense, taking large timber from the lady, and handing over the said holding well and completely repaired at the end of the term, with the pledges of John Gostwyke and William Rydere. And he gave a premium of vjd [6d] and made fealty. Grant, premium vjd [6d], fealty To this Court came Agnes Shaxton and surrended one toft and j [1] quarter of land into the hand of the lady. And afterwards the lady granted the aforesaid holding to John Rodland. To be held by the same John for the term of his life according to the custom of the Manor. Rendering and making therefrom the service and common dues therefrom due annually to the lady. And the said John will maintain, sufficiently repair the said holding at his own expense, by the pledges of John Gostwyke and William Rydere. And he gave a premium of vjd [6d] to the lady and made fealty. Heriot ij [2] sheep valued at iiijs [4s]. Grant, premium xijd [12d] fealty John Smyth came to this Court and surrendered one toft and viij [8] acres of land called Milond, and one Messuage with one headland of land, of half an acre of land, into the hands of the lady. After whose surrenders a new heriot of two sheep valued at iiijs [4s] fell due to the lady and the bailiff is answerable. And afterwards the Lady granted the said holding to John Treket. To be held by the same John for the term of his life according to the custom of the Manor. Rendering xs [10s] a year for the said Messuage and for the headland ijs[2s]. And the said John will maintain, sustain, repair and put right the said holding at his own expense, taking large timber from the lady. And the said holding will be well and sufficiently repaired when handed over at the end of his term, with the pledges of John Crook and John Rydere. And he gave xijd [12d] as premium to the lady and made fealty. Grant, premium vjd [6d] fealty To this Court came Emilia Fesaund and surrendered into the hands of the lady one cottage that she held, according to the custom of the Manor. And afterwards came Robert Dolt and took the aforesaid holding from the lady. To be held by the same Robert for the term of his life, according to the custom of the Manor. Rendering therefrom ijs [2s] a year and services to the lady. And the said Robert will maintain, sustain, repair and put right the said holding at his own expense, taking large timber from the lady. And at the end of his term he will hand over the holding well and sufficiently repaired, with the pledges of John Myton and William Tayllour. And he gave a premium of vjd [6d] and made fealty. Delivery of timber John Tunstall will deliver, to the various tenants written below, the following trees to repair their houses, that is to say to Henry Yarwey C [100] trees, to John Goffe iiijxx [80], John Yarwey vj [6], John Gaubryel iiij [4], John Bande the younger v [5], John Rydere vj [6], John Warner the younger vj xx [120] Alic’ Tele xviij [18], William Webbe v [5], Matilda Amond vj [6], John Rudland vj [6], John Myton vj [6], John Tayllour of Kerdyngton [Cardington] xj [11], John Palmer vj [6].
