Joseph Rushbrooke of Ampthill, draper – he is a draper in his father’s shop. Carr and Howell are strangers to him. On 22 October he hung a waterproof coat in the lobby leading to the shop at about 2pm. He did not notice it after. It was not sold. He never missed it. About 11pm that day a coat was brought to the front door by the Police, now produced. It has a ticket with their private mark on and another gum ticket with the name of Rushbrooke written on it. George James, superintendent of police for Ampthill Division – on 22 October between 6 and 7pm he found the 2 prisoners at the Prince of Wales beer house at Ampthill. They were both together, sitting by themselves with a table in front of them. There were 2 small bundles lying on the table in front of Howell which he said belonged to him. He searched the bundles. One of them contained the waterproof coat now produced. Howell said it was his. The coat had on the same tickets it has now. From what he saw on the tickets he took the coat to Mr Rushbrooke, who identified it as his father’s property. Howell said he bought the coat from a man as he was going out of the town. He had been in the town before he met the man on the road. He does not know who he was. The man said he was hard up and sold it to him for 8s. Howell was in custody on another charge at 7pm on 22 October. He told Carr she would also be charged with stealing the coat. Mary Ann Cole, wife of John Cole of Ampthill, keeper of a retail beer shop – they kept he Prince of Wales beer house. In the evening of 22 October the 2 prisoners came in together. She showed them into a back room. They had 2 bundles with them and laid them on the table before them. They were tied up in 2 handkerchiefs. She saw the bundles opened. The coat produced was found in one of the bundles with a ticket upon it. She did not hear either of the prisoners say anything about it. The prisoners were both taken into custody. Emma Cook – she does not wish to say anything. George Howell – he does not wish to say anything.
