    James Bartlett of Luton, shopman – he is an assistant to Mrs Emma Rawlinson who has a boot and shoe shop in King Street, Luton. On Saturday 11 April a few minutes after one he saw the prisoner standing outside the shop. He watched Brocklehurst for about an hour and about 2.15pm he went to the doorway and lifted a string of boots off a nail and was taking them away. He went and asked Brocklehurst what he was going to do with the boots. Brocklehurst said “take them off”. He gave Brocklehurst into the custody of PC Taylor and Brocklehurst admitted that he took them. Brocklehurst gave him the boots which are worth £1 8s 6d. George Taylor of Luton, police constable – he took the prisoner into custody and charged him with stealing 3 pairs of boots. Brocklehurst said “I’ve been on the drink for more than a week and hardly know what I am about – you might let me go this time”. He received the boots from Bartlett at the same time.
