- Scope and ContentSet out Monday 4 a.m. from Friday St. (went 11 p.m., lay down in clothes, beds too dirty to sleep in). Supped at Salisbury 9 p.m.: set off again 10 p.m.; travelled over Salisbury plain by moonlight in violent storm (5 in coach). Got to Exeter at 8; lay; set out at 5 a.m. (good-bye to good roads) - rocks, moors, bridges without number "the devil never saw the fellow to 'em"; arrived Plymouth 8 p.m. Wed.; stayed 2 days & met acquaintance; Saturday Sir Harry Trelawny sent his post-chaise for us; then mounted on horses for Saltash; waited near 3 hours for boat, market people jockeyed us; eventually got across in a man-of-war's boat that happend to come ashore with lieutenant; down such deep rocks & up such hills, at a walk; horses so used, they scarce ever stumble; dark; arrival at Trelawnys'. Have been one week here without one dry day.
