    Mary Jane Fleetwood of Luton, innkeeper’s wife – she is the wife of James Augustine Fleetwood. They live at the Fox Inn, Luton. On 22 July between 4 and 5pm Phillips came to her house, had some ale and asked for a bed. He went to bed about 10pm and left the next morning before she was up. There was a chest of drawers in the room Phillips slept in with a coat, a waistcoat and some children’s clothing. In the morning she went to the drawers and missed the waistcoat. She gave information to the police. PC Lansberry showed her the waistcoat produced, which is the one she lost. Joseph Lansberry of Luton, police constable – on 23 July he apprehended Phllips in Luton on a charge of stealing a coat and handed him over to the Herts Police. On 26 August he apprehended Phillips at Hertford on a charged of stealing the waistcoat. Phillips was then in the act of pledging the waistcoat. On their way to Luton Phillips said he would plead guilty. John Phillips – has nothing to say.
