- Scope and ContentRobert Whitworth: a sale porter of Luton. About 2.30pm on 27 March he went into possession of the prisoner’s house for distress of rent. He found the prisoner in the house and he unlocked the door and let Whitworth in. He informed the prisoner he had a warrant and showed it to Eames. Alfred Godfrey was with him. The prisoner seized hold of Godfrey and tried to put him out of the house. When he found he couldn’t do it, Eames left the room and picked up a poker. Eames came round the back of where Whitworth sat on a stool and threat to knock out his brains if he did not leave. He was truck with the poker and warded off the first blow with his arms. Another blow cut his hat as it struck him on the right side of his head. He seized Eames and his wife and Godfrey took the poker off of him. He went to the doctor. Alfred Godfrey: a sale porter living in John Street. He accompanied Whitworth to the prisoner’s house to levy a warrant for distress of rent. The door was opened and they went in. They saw the prisoner who told them to get out and then the prisoner got hold of him to throw him out. The prisoner failed and went into the kitchen and fetched a poker. Eames said he would knock their brains out and hit Whitworth. He saw 2 blows struck, both aimed at Whitworth’s head. David Thomson: a doctor practicing in Luton. Whitworth came to his surgery on 27 March about 3.30pm. He examined him and found a wound on his arm and a wound on the right side of his head. It was cut and so he sewed it up. It was a severe wound and considerably force must have been used to produce it. It would be sometime before Whitworth could use his arm. Statement of the accused: nothing to say.
