Enoch Holmes: he resided at Toddington and knew the prisoner as he cleaned and repaired watches and clocks. In July he had given him his silver watch to be cleaned. Rutland promised to return it in a week. Holmes did not receive it. He sent messages several time and saw him 2 or 3 times. When asked, Rutland said he would have it. Rutland had lent him a watch about 2 months ago. He had not considered taking proceedings until the policeman came and look the lent watch away. Joseph Cook: he had given the prisoner a watch to mend about a year ago. The defendant gave him another watch in July instead of his watch. They arranged Rutland was to pay 16s 6d for the watch, which he paid the previous Monday. Charles Strugess: he received a watch from Joseph Cook. Statement of the accused: nothing to say.
