    Examination of William Barker beldam: I am 28 years of age and the place of my settlement is in the parish of St Peter in the town of Bedford, which settlement I gained by apprenticeship. When I was about 14 years of age I was put apprentice by and with the consent of the trustees of the bedford Charity called Sir William Harpur's Charity I being then a poor child of and residing in Bedford, to John Beldam of the parish of St Peter, bedford, shoemaker to serve the said John beldam from the date of the Indenture 7th November 1828 unto the full end and term of seven years which said Indenture was duly executed by me William Barker Beldam and the said John beldam and duly attested in the presence of John Whitehouse (since deceased). At the time I was put out apprentice to my master he was then residing in the parish of St Peter and when I had been with him a few months my Master removed unto St Paul, Bedford when after being there two years and a half my Master removed to St Peter in which parish I lived and resided slept and served my said Master until the expiration of my apprenticeship. at the end of which period I received my Indentures from my Master and produced them to the Trustees of the aforesaid Charity upon which I received ten pounds which is paid to all apprentices who have duly served their apprenticeship. I have never done any act since in my own right to gain a settlement. I was married at Barnsley Old Church four years ago last Christmas to Elizabeth Jackson my now wife by whom I have two children living born in wedlock namely Ann aged one year and six months and Emily aged four months, and me and my wife and children are poor and actually chargeable to Barnsley aforesaid.
