Joseph Herington of Leighton Buzzard, chemist and druggist – on 14 November between 5 and 6pm a man came into his shop and asked for a ¼ lb of tobacco for Mr Truman of Wing. Mr Truman is a customer of his. He twice asked the man whether Mr Truman sent him, and the man said “yes”. He asked the man if he worked for Mr Truman and he said that he had. Supposing the man had been sent by Mr Truman he gave him three 4d packets of tobacco. He booked them to Mr Truman. The next day he saw Mr Truman who said he had not sent for any tobacco to his shop. He gave information to the police. He believes the prisoner to be the man he gave the tobacco to. George Truman of Wing (Bucks), brickmaker – he knows George Collier. Collier has worked for him but not for the last 3 or 4 years. He deals at Mr Kerrington’s shop. He did not send Collier for tobacco. He does not recollect seeing Collier since last summer. Thomas Ruffhead, police constable stationed at Leighton Buzzard – on 29 November he took Collier into custody on a warrant at Leighton. When Collier saw him he jumped over a brick wall and ran across some gardens. He overtook Collier who resisted being apprehended. At the Police Station he told Collier the charge. Collier said he knew nothing about it. George Collier – he does not wish to say anything.
