    Elizabeth Arnold of Barton, barmaid - she is barmaid at the Bull Inn at Barton. On Monday 6 November Dear came to the Bull about 8 o’clock and asked for lodgings. In the morning he came downstairs and she suspected from his manner he had stolen something. She went to her bedroom and found she had lost some earrings and a dress ring. She missed them from the mantelpiece. Dear would have to pass her bedroom on his way downstairs. She gave information to Mr Hook. About an hour later all the rings except a little piece of one of them were shown to him by Mr Hook. William Hook of Barton, innkeeper - he is the landlord of the Bull Inn. On Tuesday 7 November he went in search of the prisoner. He found Dear at Higham about a mile and a half from Barton and accused him of taking things from his house. Dear said "let me go I’ll give you all the things back". He brought Dear back to Barton and on the way Dear gave him the rings. He showed them to Arnold and she identified them. He later gave the property and the prisoner into the custody of PC Haynes. Charles Haines of Baron, police constable - on Tuesday morning Hook gave the prisoner into his custody. He charged him with stealing a pair of earrings and a dress ring from Elizabeth Arnold. Dear made no reply. Samuel Dear - he has nothing to say.
