    Annie Barnes: on Friday 3 December she was asked to go to Mrs Knight’s house. She saw the prisoner who asked her for lodging until Monday. She said she would pay and that she was taking Mrs Knight back with her as a charwoman. On 4 December Peach told her she was cook to captain Graham and had been with him several years. Captain Graham was staying at a private hotel at Bedford. On 6 December Peach said she was going to Hitchin to see her aunt and asked her for a shilling to treat Mr Tait. Peach said she would give her 2 shillings on her return. She said she was returning on the 11.55 train. Peach did not return. James Watts: he apprehended Peach at sandy on 12 December and charged her with obtaining some food and money by false pretences. She said she did not have an aunt or any other relation in Hitchin. Statement of the accused: she was driven to it by poverty. She had broken her ankle 6 months ago and have not been able to work since.
