  • Scope and Content
Certificate stating that Sarah Ann Rain and her six children had become chargeable to to the parish of St Mary on 27th August 1842.[10 Sep 1842] Examination of Samuel Wing, Clark to the Board of Guardians of the Bedford Union: Produces abovementioned certificate. I also produce an order under the hands and seals of Francis Green and John Green, Justices of the Peace for Bedford bearing date 5 March 1829 whereby Ann Rain wife of William Rain and their infant child then not baptised were ordered to be removed from St Mary, Bedford to St Giles, Northampton. Examination of Sarah Ann Rain: I am about 32 years of age. I was married in the parish church of St Mary, Bedford 9th February 1827 by my then maiden name of Ann Braddock to William Rain then of All Saints, Northampton, teadealer and draper by whom I have issue one daughter Isabella aged about 14 years. My husband left me about 12 years ago. I have not seen or heard of him during the last 8 years; the last I heard of him was that he had been transported. In March 1829 being then separated from my husband I became chargeable to the parish of St Mary and was removed with my daughter Isabella (but without my husband) to St Giles, Northampton as the place of my legal settlement. Mr Chapman, the Governor of the Bedford House of Industry conveyed me and my daughter to Northampton and delivered us to Mr Sanders the Assistant Overseer of St Giles who received and provided for us in the workhouse of that parish. I and my daughter are the persons described in that order produced by Mr Samuel Wn as Ann Rain wife of William Rain and their infant child not yet baptised. After I had remained in St Giles a few days the Overseers of that parish allowed me to return and from that time to November 1835 they allowed me and I received of them one shilling and sixpence per week and I resided out of the parish of St Giles all the time I received it. I have now five other children Edward aged 11 years, Sophia aged 9 years, William aged 7 years, Alfred aged 5 years, and Matilda aged one year. In June 1836 I became chargeable to the parish of Stevington in the County of Bedford and was removed by an order of two Justices of the Peace for Bedford (by the name Ann Rain) with my then four children Isabella, Edward, Sophia and William from Stevington to St Giles, Northampton, our last legal place of settlement. Mr William Pool then one of the Overseers of the Poor of Stevington conveyed me and my said four children to Northampton and delivered us to Mr Sanders then also Assistant Overseer of St Giles who again received and provided for us in the workhouse of that parish. I never heard of any appeal from either of the said Orders of Removal and do not believe there was any. I and my said six children are now chargeable to St Mary, Bedford and are maintained in the workhouse of the Bedford Union at the charge of the same parish. Examination of Richard Eaton, Overseer of the poor for Stevington: In consequence of a notice which I received from Mr Samuel Wing, Clerk to the guardians of the Bedford union requiring me to produce an order of two Justices of teh County of Bedford bearing date 18th June 1836 for the removal of Ann Rain and her then four children from Stevington to St Giles, Northampton as the place of their last legal settlement, I have made diligent and careful search for the said order or any duplicate thereof in the Parish Chest of Stevington and have made inquiry of parishioners who have served the office of Overseer but have been unable to find any such order or duplicate. I produce a book kept by the Overseers of the poor of Stevington of their receipts and payments on account of the said parish for the year 1836 wherein I find the following entry: - June 18 Paid the clerk to the magistrates for obtaining orders for the removal of Ann Rain and family 13s 6d, which account appears to have been duly allowed by the Auditor of the Union. Examination of Ann Pool: I am the widow of William Pool deceased who was one of the Overseers of the Poor of the parish of Stevington during 1836. I recollect him conveying Ann Rain, the pauper now present, and her four children to Northampton. I have made diligent and careful search amongst my husbands papers for the Order of Justices for removal of Ann Rain and her four children but have not been able to find the same or any duplicate thereof.
