  • Scope and Content
Examination of Richard Ireland: I am 41 years of age or thereabouts. When I was about 8 years of age I went to live with my Uncle Thomas Ireland of Woburn, gardener. He took me in the first instance because my father had a great family. I worked for my Uncle without any hiring fir about 6 years. At Michaelmas 1815 I let myself as a general yearly servant to my Uncle for one year from that Michaelmas at the wages of five pounds. I served that year at Woburn and let myself again to him for another year at six pounds wages. I continued to serve him under renewing hirings from Michealmas in each year of the two following years at increased wages of one pound a year. I slept in the parish of Woburn all the time. I left his service at Michalemas 1819 and then went to live at Warden and went out to weekly work in Lord Ongley's nurseries. I was married at Warden Church on 11th October 1821 to my present wife Elizabeth then Elizabeth Butcher by whom I have four children now living - Thomas aged 19, Mary now the wife of Richard Harris, Gabriel aged 13 and Ann aged 10 years. Gabriel and Ann are both living with me now as part of my family. About the latter part of the summer of 1822 I became chargeable to the parish of Warden and I and my wife and Thomas my then only child were removed by the order of two Justices of Bedfordshire from the parish of Warden to the parish of Woburn and there was no appeal from the order. I remained at Woburn about two years after my removal and during those two years except haytime and harvest I was maintained by that parish. I then went to live at Potsgrove and resided there four years during which I frequently had relief from the parish officers of Woburn. I then went to live at Woburn again and resided there five years. I was not chargeable to my parish during those five years. I then came to live in St Paul, Bedford. I remained there for 14 months. Then I went to Little Brickhill, Bucks. I cannot say how long I resided there. I left Little Brickhill and then came to Bedford and afterwards went back to Little Brickhill again, About 14 weeks ago whilst my family were living at Little Brickhill I being then a prisoner in Aylesbury Gaol my family were admitted to the workhouse of the Woburn Union as paupers. I have done no other act to my knowledge to gain any other settlement. I am now actually chargeable to the parish of St Cuthbert, Bedford.
