Scope and Content
The Sandy branch of E.D. Fisher and Sons, ironmongers (predecessors of Gilby) seem to have traded in the High Street from about 1910. (They do not appear in the 1906 directory). The surviving sales day books for this firm are catalogued at Z 648/2 and run from April 1926 to February 1939. On the outbreak of war (information from depositor Ray Smart) E.D. Fisher closed down and the premises was taken over by the Women's Voluntary Service. In 1946 the shop re-opened as an ironmongers run by H. Gilby until his death in 1969. The business was closed for a couple of years until purchased by Mr. Smart in 1971 who made it a limited company, but retained the old family name and trades as H. Gilby (Sandy) Ltd.
