  • Scope and Content
By an order bearing the date 28 August last under the hands and seals of St Andrew Beauchamp, Lord St John & Richard Longuet Orlebar Esquire, two of Her Majesty's Justices of the Peace the said Justices did order and direct you the Overseers of the Poor of the parish of Felmersham to convey to the County Lunatic Asylum established at Bedford in the said County Hannah Knight the wife of William Knight late of Felmersham, baker, a person insane, lunatic and dangerous to go abroad. And by an order under the hands and seals of the said Justices at the same time made the said Justices did direct that the reasonable charges for the removal, maintenance, medicine clothing and care of the said Hannah Knight should be paid and satisfied by the Treasurer of the said County of Bedford out of the County Rates. The last legal settlement of the said Hannah Knight was not then ascertained but we the undersigned two of Her Majesty's Justices of the Peace for the said County of Bedford have since enquired into the settlement of the said Hannah Knight. It being proved to us upon the examination of George Swannell one of the overseers of the Poor of Felmersham, and Samuel Wing, Clerk to the Board of Guardians of the Bedford Union within which the parished os Carlton and Felmersham are situate, upon oath that the settlement of the said Hannah Knight is in the parish of Carlton by reason of the said William Knight having rented and occupied a messuage, tenement and premises at Carlton aforesaid in the years 1837 and 1838 and having been only assessed to the relief of the poor of the said parish and having paid the said assessments. We do hereby adjudge the last legal settlement of the said Hannah Knight to be in the said parish of Carlton. Reasonable charges to the amount of four pounds two shillings and one penny halfpenny have been incurred in removing, maintenance, medicine, clothing and care of the said Hannah Knight in the County Lunatic Asylum. Within 12 calendar months next previous to the date hereof we order and direct the Overseers of the Poor of the parish of Carlton to pay to Thomas Abbott Green of the Town of Bedford, treasurer of the said County of Bedford the said sum of four pounds two shillings and one penny halfpenny for the reasonable expenses so incurred. We do further order and direct he Overseers of the poor of the parish of Carlton to provide for the future maintenance, medicine, clothing and care of the said Hannah Knight in the said Asylum such weekly sum as shall from time to time be fixed upon by the visitors of the said Asylum.
