  • Scope and Content
Examination of Samuel Ansell of Elstow, labourer: I am the father of Ann Ansell, singlewoman, who is now maintained in the workhouse of the Bedford union at the charge of the parish of St Paul, Bedford. At Deadman's Cross Statute held previous to Michaelmas 1787 I let myself as servant in husbandry to Mr James Ambridge of Kempston Hardwick in the parish of Kempston for one year from Old Michaelmas at the wages of £7.7.0 and my board and lodgings. I entered Mr Ambridge's service as agreeed upon and served him under that living and resided in his house in the said parish of Kempston for the period of a whole year as agreed. I continued in his service at Kempston after my year was up until the following 21st April when I was married by licence at the parish church of Elstow to my first wife Elizabeth Tompkins, spinster, now deceased. I then came to live at Elstow and the Overseers of Kempston gave me a certificate acknowledging my settlement to be at Kempston. After the decease of my first wife I was married a second time in 1804 to Catherine Warner, spinster, my late wife by whom I had issue my said daughter Ann Ansell who was born in or about 1814. I have received relief on various occasions from the Overseers of Kempston whilst residing at Elstow and am at this time relieved weekly at the charge of that parish. Extract from Elstow Parish Register: Samuel Ansell and Kitty Warner both of this parish were married in this Church by Banns this 16th day of January 1804. Signed by John Wing. Statement of William Chapman, Master of the Workhouse of the Bedford Union: Ann Ansell the daughter of Samuel Ansell of Elstow, labourer, is now maintained in the workhouse at the charge of the parish of St Paul. She was delivered of a male child on the 3rd day of August instant and is incapable of attending to be examined as to her settlement. Examination of Ann Ansell 24th August 1841: I am 27 years of age or thereabouts. I have done no act to my knowledge to gain a settlement in my own right. I was delievered on the third day of August instant at the workhouse of the Bedford Union of a male bastard child baptised george which is now living and I am now actyually chargeable to the parish of St paul in the town of Bedford and maintained at the expense of that parish in the said workhouse.
