- Scope and ContentArthur Witherspoon of Biggleswade, draper’s assistant - He is assistant to Mr Ryland, grocer and draper of Biggleswade. On 30 May Annie Watkins came to Mr Ryland’s shop and asked for some stair carpet for Mrs Conquest. She took 5 yards at 6 ½ a yard, 2 pairs of stockings at 6d per pair and 2 yards of elastic at 1d per yard. She told him to enter them to Mrs Conquest. He has been employed by Mr Ryland for 7 months. Mrs Conquest of Glebe Cottage is a customer of Mr Ryland. The carpet produced is the carpet he sold and the stockings similar to those he sole. He only parted with the goods because Watkins said she was sent by Mrs Conquest. Joseph Haddow of Biggleswade, police constable - he went on 3 August to the house of Charles Watkins the prisoner's father. He found the 5 yards of carpet now produced. It was upstairs but the prisoner's mother brought it down to him along with the pair of stockings. This morning he saw the prisoner in custody and cautioned her. After that she said she got the carpet and things from Mr Rylands in Mrs Conquest's name. Sarah Pope Conquest of Biggleswade, wife of John Conquest - she lives at Glebe Cottage, Biggleswade. She does not know the prisoner, never sent her for any goods and has never received the articles produced. Annie Watkins - she is very sorry.
