    Examinations touching on the place of the last legal settlement of Thomas Goddard, a private in the First or Chatham division of the Royal Marines quartered at Minster of the waters of the Medway. Joseph Sudweeks, Relieving Officer of Aylesford Union: Hannah Goddard, wife of Thomas Goddard, and George aged about 15 years, Robert aged about 13 years, Henry aged about 7 years and James aged about 10 months are now and have been for several weeks last past actually chargeable to the parish of Strood, not having any legal settlement. James Smith of the parish of Chatham, County of Kent: I am a Corporal in the first Chatham Division of Royal Marines and am acquainted with Thomas Goddard, he is a Private Marine in the first Chatham Division of Royal Marines. He is now quartered in the parish of Minster on the waters of the Medway within the limits of the City Borough of Rochester aforesaid on board of HMS Cambridge about to sail upon foreign service. I produce an attested copy of the examinaton in writing of Thomas Goddard above named which bears date 20th February 1833 touching the last legal settlement of the before named thomas Goddard. I obtained it from the hands of Adjutant Hurdle of the said Chatham Division of Royal Marines this day who received it from Thomas Goddard. The following is a copy of the attested copy:- The Examination of Thomas Goddard a Private Marine of the First or Chatham Division of Royal Marines quartered in the parish of Chatham in the County of Kent who (having been previously duly summoned to apperar before me the Reverend George Davies, Clerk, , one of His Majesty's Justices of the peace for the County of Kent to be examined and give evidence touching the place ofhis last legal settlement in England) on his oath saith: That to the best of his knowledge and belief he has done no act to gain a settlement in his own right. He first remembers himself residing in the parish of Elstow in the County of Bedford in the parish church where he believes he was baptised, and in which parish his parents Richard Goddard and Sarah his wife are or late were residing. He has also been informed and believes that his said father is legally settled in Elstow. For about two years last past he this deponent has received an allowance of half a crown per week from the Overseers of the poor of Elstow whilst residing in the said parish of Chatham. The last payment whereof he recieved by virtue of an Order on the Postmaster of Chatham aforesaid. On the 24th day of January 1833 at the parish church aforesaid he was lawfully married to his wife Hannah by whom he hath four children viz George aged nine years, Robert aged about 6 years, Joseph aged about 4 years and Henry aged about 2 years and a half who are all now with him.[20 February 1833] Hannah Goddard, wife of Thomas Goddard: I have resided with my husband ever since the year 1833 except two years when he was absent from England upon Foreign Service. To the best of my knowledge and belief my husband hath not done any act whereby to gain a settlement since. My son James now about 10 months old born at Strood aforesaid.
