  • Scope and Content
I was born at St Neots in the County of Huntingdon where my father James Lambert deceased, a labourer lived many years. At the age of about 16 years I was hired for a year to serve Isaac Arnold a baker of that parish from Michaelmas to michaelmas at the wages of three pounds and duly served him ad received my wages. I went to labouring wiork by the week at different places for about two years and then I was hired for a year to Mr James Holloway a gentleman who lived in Silver Street in St Paul, Bedford. I went into his service the day after new Michaelmas and stopped til the day after new Michaelmas following and received my full years wages being seven guineas besides one guinea and a half allowed to me instead of ale. I slept and had my meals all the time in his house. After leaving Mr Holloways service I went home to my father at St Neots for some time and then in the following spring being out of work I went to Bedford for relief and was set to work by Mr Porter who kept the House of Industry on behalf of St Paul. I having first applied to the Board I was employed there in spade husbandry a week or two at three shillings and sixpence a week and then I returned again to St Neots and worked there two or three months after which I again went to Bedford and hired myself to John Nelson of St Paul, dealer in Earthenware and glass, for a year but only stopped in his service ten months and having then left Bedford to travel with earthenware on my own account which I did for two months when I hired myself to Hannah Stafford, widow, dealer in earthenware of Thornhaugh in the Liberty of Huntingdon Market for a year at weekly wages. I came to Thornhaugh and after serving her there fopr four moths we were married at Thornhaugh in which parish I have since resided with my said wife who is now in an insane state and quite incapable of taking care of herself and has so been for seven or eight weeks last past and upwards and is not likely apparently to get better. I have never done any act whatsoever to gain a settlement except before set forth.
