things sent just what a soldier needs in South Africa - woollen cap especially useful for outpost duty at night just outside Bloemfontein after a tiring march - crossed Orange River on 4 March at Norvals Pont - arrived 4 April glad to hear - short of food on the March about 40,000 troops were under Lord Roberts mounted Infantry had over 40 casualties everything gone better since Lord Roberts' arrival
