Charles Hollingsworth Hewett: a plait merchant with a shop in George Street and a warehouse in Castle Street, Luton. He recalled instruction Hale to get someone to assist him in getting bales up. The prisoner was the one who assisted. (Cross Examination) he could not remember paying the prisoner for it. Walter Hale: John Bacchus was employed by him to get some bales of plait upstairs at the warehouse. Bacchus asked if there was any plait about and Hales sold him a bundle of white canton plait. He saw Bacchus again at Market Hill and he asked Hale if he had any more. He told him he could have another. Bacchus’s wife came for it. The same arrangement was made a few days later. A fourth transaction was also made. Horne knew all about it and he always divided the money with Horne. Samuel Kitchener: he apprehended the prisoner on 20 October. He confessed to having some plait from hale. He had not written down this statement and could only recall it from memory. Statement of the accused: he reserved his defence.
