- Scope and ContentEdward Swann of St Paul Bedford, clerk – he lives in Conduit Street. Yesterday 28 July [sic] about 6pm he set an umbrella he had been using on the steps of the door of his house. There is a garden in front of the house and it is about 15 or 18 yards from the road. He was looking out of the window soon after and saw the prisoner come up the garden to the door. When he did not hear a ring at the bell he looked out but could see no one. He missed the umbrella. Soon after, he saw the prisoner in the custody of John Forrester. The umbrella produced is the one taken. John Forrester, police constable – from information received he apprehended the prisoner near the fountain in St Mary’s. He told the prisoner he wanted the umbrella he had under his arm. The prisoner said he bought the umbrella used for 1s. The umbrella produced is the one he took from him.
