- Scope and ContentAbout 24 years ago he was hired by John Taylor of Royston in the parish of Bassingbourn (Cambs), chimney sweep, to climb chimneys for a year at 26s a year wages and board, lodging, clothing and washing. He went at Whitsuntide and left the following Whitsuntide. He then let himself to John Flindell of Royston (Herts) for half a year at 1s per week. He stopped the time and returned to John Taylor's at 1s 6d a week. He continued there about 2 years until Taylor died. He has since lived in a beer shop at Luton called teh Red House at a rent of £12 a year, but he lived there only 7 months. He has never done anything to gain a settlement since he left his service with John Taylor. He was married to his wife Phoebe Ellis 18 years ago last September in Hitchin Church. His wife is insane and is now in the Luton Union Workhouse, chargeable to the Luton Union.
