James Odell of Maulden, master chimeney sweeper - he had been employed by Revd Beard of Cranfield to sweep his chimneys. His men swept them about a month ago, he believes on Friday 28 April. Mr Beard was not at home so he did not receive the money for them. Yesterday 30th May he sent his grandson James Odell to take the money due. His grandson when he came back told him that James Sinfield had already received the money. The money due to him was 12s 6d. Sinfield has been occasionally employed by him but not for several months. James Odell junior - he works for his grandfather as a chimney sweeper. Yesterday his grandfather told him to go to Mr Beard's of Cranfield and if that gentleman had returned to get the money due to him. He went and one of the female servants told him that a lad had been there asking for the money and that he had been sent to Mr Langston. He then went to Mr Langston who told him that a lad had taken the money. He asked if Mr Langston would know the lad again - he said yes. He suspected who it was and went for the policeman. He took James Sinfield into custody. John Langston of Cranfield, farmer - he is an agent for Mr Beard and pays his bills when he is from home. On Monday May 29 James Sinfield came to him and said his master had sent him for the money owing for sweeping Mr Beard's chimneys, amounting to 15s. Sinfield added that his master was going to give their business in favour of his son or he should not have been so particular. He told Sinfield to call again in half an hour and he would go to Mr Beard's to enquire if it was all right. He found that money was owing and paid Sinfield 15s. He asked Sinfield's name and whether he could write - he said not but put his mark to the bill he now produces. James Sinfield - nothing to say.
