- Scope and ContentI am 60 years of age, was born in St Paul, Bedford 21st June 1776 of parents belonging to that parish. My father died when I was about seven years old, his name William Ebdon. When I was about 14 I was bound by Indenture apprentice to Mr Hodgkins of HIgh Street, St Paul, Bedford, staymaker for seven years, the whole of which term I served. I slept at my Masters at St Paul, Bedford. The indenture was left with the Trustees of Sir William Harpurs Charity who gave me a sumn of money - ten pounds - to set up business with. I left St Paul the same summer that my apprenticeship expired ans went to Hitchin in Hertfordshire where I worked journey for half a year and then went to see a relation, very soon afterwards came to Chesterfield and after I had been there half a year returned to Bedford where I stayed only a few months and then returned to Chesterfield where I have been working by the week for Mr John Farnham for a period of 35 or 36 years. During that time I could have left at the end of any week. The Overseer of Chesterfield has paid me four shillings for relief - I am very ill - I never was married. I never served any annual office or rented a tenement of ten pounds per year nor done any other act to gain a settlement.
