Lists deeds relating to Sir Coventry Payne and his will, reviews history of the case: Sir Coventry's personal estate (other than specific bequest to daughter) only amounted to £2,125 probate Valuation. £2000 left under Lady Mary Payne's will as a charge on the estate was considered to have merged, re £500 pa: 'Sir Philip continued to pay money to his sister [Henrietta Townsend] for a while but owing to the depreciation in the value of the land in the neighbourhood and the amount spent in interest and repairs, Mrs Townsend's income decreased'. Reference to Lord McNaghten's opinion of 1886 Deed of 14 July 1887, changing money due from £500 pa to £250 pa. Further charge of £5700, 23 July 1887. Sale of West Indies estate (used for paying off some of the mortgages - detailed) 11 April 1892. Reduces debt to £655 15s 3d. Sale of part of lands (subject to £12000 Mortgage in favour of Marriage Settlement Trustees), ie 126 acres 1 rood 9 perches to J C Hill of Smithwood Hall, Highgate Esq for £7,568 15s 0d (£655 15s 3d it is proposed should be paid by purchaser to pay off Blood's Mortgage). Opinion of R J Quin of 14 Old Square, [Lincoln's Inn]. Support application with affidavit of Mr Blood setting out why Testator's estate entitled to £2000 charge in the Wootton Estate by Will of Lady Mary Payne. £1344 15s 3d partly paid to cover arrears of interest.
