Charles Hedges: a farmer of Eaton Bray and employer of Benjamin Hubbins. On the morning of 20 December, Hubbins was thrashing peas in the barn. Hubbins had a basket in the barn and Hedges saw him coming away from the basket and suspected something was wrong. He looked in the basket and saw there were peas in it. Hedges went to the Chequers public house, which the prisoner went past on his way to dinner. When the prisoner came past he stopped him and asked what he had in the basket. Hubbins said it was the first time and he hoped to be forgiven. Hedges sent for the police and gave him into custody. William Penderleath: took the prisoner into custody and searched his house. He found a quantity of peas mixed with beans. They were upstairs in a box.
