  • Admin/biog history
Records produced by Stanley Litchfield (1900 – 1991), the fourth and last generation to operate the family firm. The business was previously operated by Jesse Litchfield (1823 – 1908)father to Eli Litchfield (1848 – 1943) father to William Wadsworth Litchfield (1873 – 1949) father to Stan. George Litchfield (1843 - ?) brother of Eli also worked as a wheelwright. William Wadsworth Litchfield never owned 33/35 High Street, Riseley which the family believe passed directly from Eli to Stan. Married Elsie Litchfield (distant cousin). No children. The business operated from 35/37 High Street, Riseley (now known as Carpenters cottage). The workshop was next door, now replaced by the village police station. Business closed in 1965 and was taken over by Instrument Engineering. Stan worked as an aircraft fitter during the First World War. His beautifully hand written and illustrated record of maintenance processes and techniques for First World War aircraft was donated to the RAF Museum at Hendon after his death. Stan’s sister Eva married Ted Pentlow, the local blacksmith and her son Bob still operates that business today as an agricultural engineer.
