- Scope and ContentBorn at Swineshead in 1788, was bound apprentice to his father William Holding, carpenter, also of Swineshead, in 1798 for seven years. After two years, because of insufficient work, his father released him and Major obtained work with James Woodruffe, St. Cuthbert’s, carpenter, as a journey man. He worked here for two years and then worked for Richard Mantle, St. Paul’s, carpenter. His wife’s name was Elizabeth and he had one daughter, Mary Ann, born about Christmas 1809.
