- Scope and ContentGeorge Burley: father of the prisoner. The prisoner was 19 years old and lived with his father, but had absented himself for 3 nights. On 12 October, George Burley left his bedroom shortly after 5 o'clock and locked his bedroom door. The only window was fastened inside and there was only one door. He returned about 9 o’clock having received information that his window was open and a pane of glass taken out. The door to the bedroom was locked as he had left it. He missed a pair of trousers and found a watch and silver three penny pieces taken from a previously locked drawer. He saw a hurdle under the window and surmised it had been used to assist someone to get in. The hurdle had marks on nailed boots upon it. He had reason to suspect his son and gave the information to Constable Scott. Edwrad Scott: he traced the prisoner to St Albans but then lost the trace. Next day he went to London with Mr Burley and traced him from there to Hitchin and from there to [?] moor 2 miles from Hitchin. Scott searched the prisoner and told him the charge. The prisoner’s father told him he was going the right way to be sent from the country and the prisoner replied "I wish I had years back".Statement of the accused: nothing to say
