- Scope and ContentWilliam Johnson in about 1788 was bound apprentice for seven years by Bedford Charity, to his father Thomas Sumptor Johnson, St. Mary’s, shoemaker. He completed his apprenticeship and received the benefaction of the Charity. About 1791 he was married at St. George’s, Hanover Square, London, to Martha Philips and by June 1795 there were two children, Sophia, aged three years, and Sarah, aged eighteen months.
