John Slinn: a draper of Woburn and the prisoner had been in his service as a shopman for the previous 2 months. From information he received from another shopman, he suspected the prisoner of robbing him, although he had missed nothing. In consequence of the information, he marked 8 shillings, 2 sixpences and 3 fourpenny pieces. On 21 September, he employed someone to purchase something and gave him the marked money. After the person had been, he went to the tills and instead of finding 10 shillings, he only found 9. The prisoner had waited on the person who purchased the goods with the marked money. He sent for the police. On being taken into custody by the policeman, Williams asked to speak to Slinn. Williams acknowledged that he had once before taken money from the till. Williams was searched and the marked shilling taken from his pocket. Anthony Sibley: took the prisoner into custody on 21 September. He searched Williams and found a shilling, a sixpence and 2 half pence. The shilling was marked and identified by the prosecutor. On conveying Williams to the police station, Williams said "I don't know whatever possessed me to take it".Statement of the accused: with sorrow he pleaded guilty to the charge.
