  • Scope and Content
Ann Robinson, wife of Thomas Robinson of Kempston, victualler - her husband keeps the Quart Pot public house at Kempston. Yesterday afternoon John Barrington came to her and said he was to have a shilling and two pints of beer as he had been driving some sheep for Thomas Kingston who would call and pay her. She knows Mr Kingston and that he has a farm in Wootton Field and usually passes their house on his way to and from the farm, so she gave Barrington a shilling and 2 pints of beer - she had been in the habit of occasionally supplying beer to persons sent by Mr Kingston's order but she never before paid money for him. Barrington said Thomas Kingston the son of the person who occupies the farm had sent him. Thomas Kingston the younger of St Mary's Bedford, butcher - his father occupies a farm in Wootton Field. The road to and from Bedford is by the Quart Pot. Barrington was not employed by him yesterday or at any other time to drive sheep for himself or his father. He did not authorise him to go to Mrs Robinson or any other person for money or beer. William Fane, police constable no.1 - yesterday afternoon he was standing opposite the Quart Pot and heard Mrs Robinson speak to Barrington. She asked if he was quite sure Mr Kingston ordered him to come for 2 pints of beer and a shilling and he said yes. From Barrington's manner he had reason to believe he was telling an untruth. He said to Barrington it would not belong before Mr Kingston came back from the field and he would keep him in custody until he was satisfied. This was after Mrs Robinson had paid Barrington. After a little time Kingston the elder came by and said he had not sent Barrington to Mrs Robinson for any beer or money. Barrington offered to return the shilling and make it up. He refused and took Barrington into custody.
