    Drusilla Whitehead: housekeeper to John Tebbs who kept the St. John Arms Inn at Melchbourne. The prisoner had been at Mr Tebbs on 30 June and drank in the house. Bolton asked leave of Mr Tebbs to stay in one of the outhouses. On the morning of 1 July he came to the house of again and drank, leaving in the middle of the day. Some time after he had gone, she missed a silver teaspoon marker J.I.T. She suspected Bolton and gave the information to John King, the police constable. Within a day or two he brought the spoon to her to identify. Jospeh Clare: on 20 July he had been at Riseley in the Swan public house. Bolton was there and asked if he would purchase a teaspoon. He said the spoon was his own and he was selling all his property in consequence of his wife having left him. Clare bought it for 15 pence. Mrs Young the landlady was present when he bought it. John King: took receipt of the spoon from Mr Clare.
