  • Scope and Content
Born at St. Paul’s, where father Thomas Woodward, was a parishioner. Bound apprentice 24 June 1772 by Bedford Charity to John Winn, Daventry, Northants; carpenter, for term of 7 years. Served only 2 years of his apprenticeship due to Winn having no work, and went then to reside with his father at St. Paul’s till he could meet with another place. Lived at home 2 or 3 months, during which time he worked as a journeyman. Winn returned £5 of the apprenticeship fee, and Examinant was then bound apprentice to Joseph Usher, Cople, carpenter, for term of 5 years from 19 September 1774, the portion of the Apprenticeship fee returned by Winn being paid to Usher. Served Usher for the full term of his apprenticeship at Cople and received the Benefaction allowed by the Bedford Charity to boys who served their full time. Worked subsequently at different places as a journeyman. No other settlement. Married his late wife Alice Hopkins at St. Leonard’s Shoreditch, Middx, 19 March 1784, who bore him one child, Elizabeth, now aged about 14 years. Married present wife Mary Freeborn, widow, at St. Paul’s, 7 May 1799.
