- Scope and ContentBorn at Legbourn, Lincs., where father Richard was a parishioner. Bound apprentice about 1782 to John Grundy, Legbourn, smith, for a term of 7 years, without payment of fee. Served Grundy at Legbourn for about 4½ years when, as a result of disputes between the two, Barker and Grundy parted by mutual consent, Grundy delivering up Barker’s Indentures. Barker then worked for himself as a journeyman, with different masters, by the week. Hired from John Read, Bedford, a dwellinghouse in St. Mary’s, about a fortnight prior to Old Lady Day 1795, at a yearly rent of £3/10/-, for a year. One week later, hired from William Robinson, Houghton Conquest, 2 closes of pasture at Houghton Regis, at a yearly rent of £9, for a term of one year from Old Lady Day 1795. Presently held both the said house and ground and lodged in St. Paul’s. Married Mary Irons at St. Paul’s, 24 April 1795.
