- Scope and ContentThomas George Collings of Dunstable, watchmaker and silversmith - on Friday 6 May between 5 and 6pm Abraham Godfrey and William Derbyshire came to his shop together. Godfrey offered him the bowl of a silver spoon (produced) for sale. He examined it and asked if they had the other part. William Derbyshire went out and returned int a few minutes with the handle (produced). He told them they must leave the two pieces for a few days. The next morning Henry Young and William Derbyshire came to his shop again and Henry Young asked to have the pieces of spoon back that Derbyshire had left the previous day. He said Young must leave it with him until Monday. The handle of the spoon is marked with the letter "H". He made enquiries and learned Mr Gould had lost a spoon. William Derbyshire of Dunstable, cordwainer - about 5pm on Friday 6 May his father sent him on an errand. He saw Henry Young near the Red Lion in Dunstable. Young asked to go and play at soldiers. Young pulled out of his pocket part of a silver spoon and said "we'll go and sell it" and buy an accordian. Abraham Godfrey came up and said he would go and sell it. He said he would go with Godfrey. They went together to Mr Collins shop where they saw his son, who would not buy it. They later went again to Mr Collins shop and saw Mr Collins, who asked Godfrey if he had the other part of the spoon. He went to Young and asked if he had the other part. Young pulled it out of his pocket and began to rub it on the step as if trying to get the letter out. He [Derbyshire] said "never mind, give it me". Young gave it to him and he took it to Mr Collins who kept the two parts and told them to come again in a few days as someone might come and inquire for it. Henry Young had told him he was going round to deliver some bills and found the bowl of the spoon outside Mr Gould's back way. After he had left the two parts of the spoon with Mr Collins Heny Young said "don't spilt - if I get a good price for it you shall have 3d and Godfrey 6d". Mary Gould, wife of Daniel Gould of Dunstable, Baptist Minister - she knows the two pieces of silver spoon produced by Thomas George Collings. The handle is marked with the letter "H", the initial of her maiden name "Hitchman". The pieces belong to the same spoon. She knows the spoon to be her husband's property. Its value is 4 shillings and upwards. Henry Young - he picked the spoon up opposite Mr Collins. Godfrey was with him and he said "I'll go and sell it". Derbyshire came up and said he would go with Godfrey. They took it to Mr Collins who said he would not buy it without the other bit. Soon after Mr Collins' son sent his [Young's] cousin to him and told him to bring the bit to Mr Collins and he would buy it. Godfery and Derbyshire went with the bowl part. While they were gone Halifax said "let's look at the other part", took it out of his hand and began to rub it on the pavement. Soon after Godfrey and Derbyshire came and asked for it. He gave it to them to sell to Mr Collins.
