    Daniel Cox: Cox lodged at the Wagon & Horses and Whitbread lodged at The Boot. On 17 March, Cox left a bundle of clothes at the house of Amos Cox in Luton. He called about 7 o'clock for the bundle and was told the prisoner had taken them away. He advised the police. He did not see the prisoner again until 11 April when he wanted to make up with Cox. Cox told him he dare not. He gave Whitbread into custody. Ann Cox: on 17 March, Daniel Cox left a bundle of clothes at her husband’s house and the prisoner also left a bundle. The next day the prisoner came to the house and said he was there for both bundles. She asked if Daniel Cox was not coming back to see her and the accused said no, they were going off directly. He took both bundles away and she asked him where they were going to. He said Daniel was at the Wagon & Horses and they were going to Hampstead together. About 7 o'clock Daniel came to enquire of his bundle and she told him Shaw had taken them away. Joseph Morgan: a lodging house keeper of Leighton Buzzard. Henry Whitbread came to him and asked if he would buy any clothes. Morgan side yes and was offered a jacket, stockings, 3 handkerchiefs, a cap and a waistcoat. He offered him 4 shillings and Whitbread was not happy with that and so he offered him a nights lodging too. Next morning Whitbread went away and he saw him no more. On 11 April he was approached by a police man asking if he had seen a man of Whitbread's description. he told him he had and showed him the clothes he had purchased. James Worsley: he went to Mr Morgan's house on 11 April, and asked if he had a blacksmith lodging at his house. He said he had and showed him a bundle of clothes that he had bought from him. Of the 3 handkerchiefs in the bundle, Morgan had sold one on to a man who had since gone to London. He took possession of the goods and they were identified by the prosecutor as his.
