  • Scope and Content
He has been living with Allen for about 3 months of more. Allen has been very ill the last month and he has been doing everything for him as nurse – bed maker and so on. He took a deal of trouble and could not lose his time for nothing. He and Allen agreed he was to have 6d a day and a shilling or two anytime he wanted it. He had 3s in the box yesterday morning towards dinner time. Mr Donne came down to him after dinner and gave him another shilling which Allen left on the box. When Mr Donne came downstairs he went up to Allen, gave him a little toast and water and asked him if he should put the shilling off the box with his others in the window. Allen said he might, but said he would have very little once he had settled with him [Catlin] and Mrs Chettles. He considered it his money. He left home then and went to the public house where he had two pints of beer. Having been a Tea Whater which he could not stand any longer it made him drunk. He cannot say whether he went home and asked him for the money or not. He does not know whether he used any money of Allen’s or not or how it came into his pocket. He doe not know what time he went home for he was so drunk.
